Every day, Community Library Specialist Terry Jones delivers books and so much more to seniors at assisted living facilities, children in small rural schools and remote ranches throughout Marin. Through rain and wind, on narrow winding roads, Terry assures that the bookmobile will be pulling to the curb and opening its doors so that young and old are not separated by too many miles from the treasury of titles available from Marin County Free Library. Thanks to Terry and her bookmobile team, folks in far flung places are able to explore and enjoy the library too! Celebrate what Terry does here and here!

Tickets for the Marin County Free Library fundraiser, An Evening with Kay Ryan, are now available at the College of Marin bookstore and the Archbishop Alemany Library on the campus of Dominican University as well as at all the branches of the Marin County Free Library. You can also purchase tickets online at Book Passage.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear Marin County's own Kay Ryan speak on November 18th, 7:30 p.m. at Angelico Hall on the campus of Dominican University. Her amazing accolades include two terms as the U.S. Poet Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize, a Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation, four Pushcart Prizes, a Guggenheim fellowship, and most recently, a MacArthur "Genius Award." Proceeds from the fundraiser will fund arts and poetry programming at the Marin County Free Library. Adult tickets are $25 and student tickets are $20.

Free College Entrance Essay Writing Workshops for High School Seniors

On two upcoming Saturdays, high school seniors and college transfer students are invited to attend free college entrance/scholarship essay writing workshops at the Point Reyes Library.

On Saturday, October 29 from 2:30-4:30, we will offer a class called "Getting Started: A Brainstorming session drawing on UC, Common Application, and scholarship prompts to help you get started on your personal essay."

On Saturday, November 12 from 2:30-4:30, we will focus on editing, revising, improving and polishing your college entrance or scholarship essay.

The Point Reyes Library offers these workshops in collaboration with 10,000 Degrees and the Tomales Bay Library Association. Although the workshops are free, advance registration is required. The instructor for both classes is currently a PhD student in Classical Literature at the University of California, Berkeley where she also teaches classes in reading and composition.

Poet Francisco X. Alarcón speaks in Point Reyes

Award winning poet and writer Francisco X. Alarcón will speak this evening, Friday, October 14 at West Marin School in Point Reyes at 6:00 p.m.

Although he was born in California, Alarcón grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico. He returned to the United States where he attended California State University at Long Beach and then earned his MA from Stanford University. He is now on the faculty of the University of California at Davis.

Alarcón's poetry for adults includes Tattoos (1985); Body in Flames/Cuerpo en llamas (1990); De amor oscuro/Of Dark Love (1991); Snake Poems: An Aztec Invocation (1992), winner of the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation; and From the Other Side of Night/Del otro lado de la noche: New and Selected Poems (2002).

Meet the Dirt Diva

Come and meet the Dirt Diva. Raised and hardened in the asphalt jungle of New York City, Annie Spiegelman moved to the Bay Area over ten years ago and became a passionate environmentalist and Master Gardener. She writes an organic gardening column for the Pacific Sun newspaper, Huffington Post and is the author of several gardening books Talking Dirt: the dirt diva's down-to-earth guide to organic gardening is her most recent publication.

Congratulations MacArthur "genius" honoree, Kay Ryan!

Celebrated Marin County poet Kay Ryan has just been awarded a $500,000 "genius" grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She adds this to an already astonishing list of honors and awards, including a Pulitzer Prize and two terms as U. S. Poet Laureate. Kay has generously agreed to do a fundraiser for the Marin County Free Library on Friday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Dominican University's Angelico Hall. Tickets are on sale now at all the branches of the Marin County Free Library.

Marin City Spoken Word Competition

So you think you can rap? Compete with friends in a performance poetry showdown or come to cheer on the participants. Marin City youth ages six to eighteen are invited to submit their best rhymes online at Marin Webstars.

Participants will then perform in front of an audience, a judge and TV cameras. Performance Artist and Poet Kevin Simmons will be the guest judge, and the winners will receive prizes from Best Buy and Subway.

Both the Children’s (age 6-12) and the Teen (age 13-18) Performances will be broadcast on local television and on the Web!

Next Saturday, June 25, West Marin will once again host the amazing rescue animals of Wild Things, Inc. Wild Things is a 501C3 non-profit animal rescue agency that works with U.S. Immigration and the Forest Service to save injured and endangered animals and share them with children at schools and libraries.

The Wild things come to our libraries as part of our Children's Summer Reading Program, and thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Marin County Library. Teen and Adult Summer Reading Programs have arrived at the Marin County Free Library!

Our Adult Summer Reading program is Novel Destinations. Sign up online from the MCFL website and receive a book bag the next time you come into any MCFL branch. Submit a review online each week to enter that week’s systemwide raffle of a gift bag full of goodies! Any participant who submits a review will also be entered in the grand prize raffle of eBook readers when this program ends in August. Share a favorite author or title with our local community, have fun and don’t forget to check out the free Novel Destination events happening this summer at all Marin County Free Library branches!

The teen program You Are There works a little differently. For every book you read, submit a review and you will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a weekly drawing. Each MCFL branch will have weekly winners. All entries will also be included in the Grand Prize Raffle at the end of summer.
So the more you read, the better your chances to win!

Book Place: Summer Clearance Sale June 24-26

It’s time for our Summer Clearance Sale of used books and other materials at the Book Place June 24-26. The sale will feature 50% off the already-low prices on nearly everything in the store, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, and other materials. More than 95% of materials are donated, not library discards.

While we are continually grateful for the continuing support and the donations brought to the shop, we need to clear out to make room. The storewide sale includes books starting at 25 cents and up. This is a great time to pick up some great reads for the summer vacation season.

The sale kicks off Friday morning, and runs through the weekend; pre-selection of books prior to the start of the sale will not be permitted. Sale hours are Friday, 10 am-7pm; Saturday, 10 am-4 pm, and Sunday, noon-4pm. Replenishment will continue throughout the sale, so return to find more deals. Cash and check only, please.

Join Fine Arts docent Dr. Jim Kohn as he presents a lecture and slide show about the the Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris exhibit, currently on display at the De Young Museum. The show features more than 100 works from a wide range of artistic styles.

In addition to his fine arts lectures at the De Young and Legion of Honor Museums, Jim teaches in the English Department at San Francisco State University. This will be his second visit to Bolinas and we're looking forward to welcoming him back.

Announcing Disney Digital Online, Interactive Books

I am pleased to announce the Marin County Free Library has made available OverDrive's collection of Disney Digital interactive online books.
The collection offers over 600 classic and new titles with lovable characters, including Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Disney Princesses, Hannah Montana and many more.
The browser-based, interactive online titles from the Disney Digital Books website are “always available” for simultaneous use. These books are available at every skill level, so kids of all ages can read along, too. Users can even use Disney’s magic pen to turn pages, hear words pronounced, find definitions, and access additional help. This enhances readers’ opportunities for learning and fun.
Disney’s interactive online books can be accessed on Windows and Mac computers that are connected to the internet. Each online book is intergrated into our digital catalog so you can discover the titles through browsing. In addition, you can select the “Disney Online Books” format in the Advanced Search. When you check out a title and then click on the “Launch” button, the book will open in the web browser.

On Monday May 16, Joan Robbins will interview Nicolette Hahn Niman about her book, The Righteous Porkchop: Finding a Life and Good Food Beyond Factory Farms. Nicolette Hahn Niman is an environmentalist and cattle rancher who has been published in the New York Times and regularly speaks at environmental conferences. This interview is part of Joan Robbins' continuing series, Homegrown, and will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Bolinas Firehouse, 100 Mesa Road, Bolinas.

Spring Wildflower Slide Show

Join Wilma and Bill Follette for a California Wildflower Spring Slide Show at the Inverness Library on Saturday, May 14 at 4:00 p.m.

Wilma Follette was one of the founders of the Marin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and has taught plant identification at the College of Marin. She is also a co-author of the 2007 revised edition of Marin Flora. Her husband, Bill Follette is an accomplished plant photographer with a slide collection of over 15,000 slides of interesting plants in beautiful locations.
